Odoo for Manufacturing Companies in the UAE
Manufacturing is the part of an ERP project where the software either pays for itself or quietly dies. A trading company can limp along on spreadsheets; a plant cannot. Across factories in the UAE and back home in Pakistan, I've watched Odoo run a shop floor cleanly — and I've watched it stall because nobody got the bills of materials right first. This is what the Manufacturing app actually does, how it costs a product, and what I set up before anyone presses "produce".
What Odoo Manufacturing actually covers
Odoo markets its Manufacturing app as "MRP + MES + PLM + Quality + Shop Floor + Maintenance" on a single platform, and for once the marketing is close to the truth. At its core, the app helps manufacturers schedule, plan and process manufacturing orders. A Manufacturing Order (MO) is processed by completing all the work orders listed under its Work Orders tab, and once you select a bill of materials on an MO, its Components and Work Orders tabs auto-populate from that BoM. Around that core sit companion apps — Quality, Maintenance, PLM and the tablet-based Shop Floor — plus native links to Inventory, Purchase and Sales so you can schedule manufacturing based on sales and organise the supply chain. Here is how the pieces line up, and which edition each one needs.

The heart of it is the bill of materials. A BoM documents the specific components and quantities needed to produce or repair a product, serving as the blueprint for a manufactured good or kit, and it can include the production operations and instructions too. For anything with sub-assemblies, Odoo supports multi-level BoMs that nest one BoM inside another — so a semi-finished product reused across several parents is defined once and pulled in everywhere it belongs.
How manufactured cost really works
If you only get one thing right, make it costing. Odoo computes an estimated MO Cost from the cost and quantity of a BoM's components plus the cost of completing its operations. It then tracks a Real Cost that can diverge once production starts — if the actual component quantities, work-order durations or employee hourly costs differ from what the BoM assumed. Operation cost is simply the work center's hourly rate multiplied by the operation's duration; for the estimate Odoo can add a "per employee" rate on top of the "per workcenter" cost, and for the Real Cost it uses the hourly cost of the employee who actually did the work. A component's cost, meanwhile, is based on its average purchase cost across your purchase orders.
My honest take: the formula is sound, but it is only as good as the two numbers feeding it — your work-center cost per hour and your component purchase costs. Configure a work center with a guessed rate and every MO after it lies to you. I spend real time on those fields before I trust a single costing report, because a plant that can't cost a job can't price one.
Planning: from reorder rules to MPS
Most UAE SMEs I work with start with simple reorder rules and grow into real production planning. When they do, the Master Production Schedule (MPS) is the tool — it lets you manually plan manufacturing orders and purchase orders against forecasted quantities. Set expectations on one point early: adding a product to the MPS does not auto-create anything. It suggests replenishment quantities and waits for you to generate the MOs and POs, which is exactly the control a planner wants rather than a system firing orders on its own.
Lead times are the other half of realistic planning. Odoo separates Manufacturing Lead Time — the number of days needed to complete an MO from confirmation, weekends included — from Days to Prepare Manufacturing Order, the days needed to replenish components or build sub-assemblies, which you either set directly on the BoM or let Odoo compute by summing components' purchase and manufacturing lead times. And when part of production goes outside your walls, Odoo's subcontracting supports three workflows: not supplying components at all, resupplying them per confirmed purchase order, or dropshipping them to the subcontractor. Alongside all this, the app offers just-in-time replenishment propositions to make, buy, sub-contract or deliver components from another warehouse.
What I configure first in a UAE plant
Every plant is different, but my sequence rarely changes:
- Master data and BoM accuracy first. Nothing downstream works if the bills of materials are wrong. For products with sub-assemblies I lean on multi-level BoMs, which organise a complex product by defining each procurement or production step separately — cleaner than duplicating the same components across every parent.
- Routing realism over routing ambition. Work centers are where work orders are processed, and Odoo uses them to track costs, make schedules, plan capacity, organise equipment and track efficiency; each carries fields for Capacity, Cost per hour, a Time Efficiency multiplier and an OEE target, plus optional setup and cleanup times. Specifying a work center is required for any work order defined in a BoM's Operations tab. I resist modelling every nuance on day one — a routing you can't keep accurate is worse than a simple one you can.
- Quality gates where they earn their place. Quality Control Points create checks automatically at predetermined intervals — every time conditions are met, randomly on a set percentage of operations, periodically, or on demand — and quality alerts capture root causes with corrective and preventive actions. On Enterprise, the Shop Floor app puts this on a tablet at the work center; it can even run in a dedicated workstation's Chrome browser locked to just that app, and a Quality Checks button appears on a work order's card when checks apply.
- Barcode adoption, if the floor will use it. Scanning to trigger manufacturing steps, lots and serial numbers cuts data-entry errors — but only if operators actually adopt it, and Barcode is an Enterprise feature, so I pilot before I roll out.
- Phased go-live. I almost always stabilise Inventory and Purchase before switching Manufacturing on, so components and stock are trustworthy before the first MO is ever confirmed.
The practical takeaway: a manufacturing go-live succeeds or fails on master data. Get the BoMs, work-center rates and component costs right first, and every schedule, cost and quality check built on top of them tells the truth.
Edition and UAE notes
Two edition facts decide most manufacturing projects. First, the core Manufacturing (MRP) and Maintenance apps run on both Community and Enterprise — so corrective and preventive maintenance requests, which can target a piece of equipment or a whole work center and even block that work center while the work is processed, are available to everyone, along with the mean-time-between-failure (MTBF), mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) and expected-next-failure statistics Odoo computes automatically to help plan preventive work. Second, Quality, PLM, the Shop Floor / Control Panel / Scheduling features and Barcode are all Enterprise-only. If your factory needs those — and most serious ones do — that settles the edition question. PLM is worth the upgrade on its own for many: it manages engineering change orders and stores every BoM version in an ECO, so you can test and improve a product without disrupting live production until the change is applied.
On the UAE side, nothing about manufacturing changes the local compliance picture: VAT still applies to what you buy and sell, and the country's e-invoicing mandate is a separate workstream I now raise in every planning conversation.
